Safety and emergencies

Adult Proofing Your Home

You’ve heard of making a home safe for children, well, something similar can be applied to an
adult’s home. What to watch for:

Occasional rugs - those welcome mats by the door, the one in front of the stove, the one by
the tub, the ones around your bed, in some homes, small rugs are all over the place
- if so,
consider cutting back as m
any people fall and trip on them, causing serious injury, especially
the elderly
and the young drunk

Mop up spills around the kitchen, rainy puddles at the door and a use a quick
towel on the bath tub floor. Have mops and towels just for these purposes on

hand where and when you need them.

Bath tub do dads, keep clutter away from the bath area

Make sure the rails you lean on are strong enough to hold your weight; it’s better to
have no rails around the bath than too many, as they are what you hit your head on when you

fall, so use only what you need, no more and consider cushioning them with a draped towel

Kitchen knives - living alone, I don’t even have a sharp knife. I haven’t used one at all for

years. I use a pair of scissors and a nice serrated butter knife for all my needs. The only
time a sharp knife might come in handy is cutting up raw meat, but I usually work
around it with my scissors. Any meat   I buy is usually cut up already.

Keep sharp pointy items tucked away - not sticking out where you or someone else can

            fall on them.

Beware working around electrical sockets. Yes, they do have a charge and it can bite. Don’t
take them for granted. Be especially careful when working with aquarium, washing and bathing
[wet hands].

Beware the stove being left on and kitchen burns. Get good pot holders and look for safe areas
to put big heavy hot pots and pans. Don’t wear long sleeves when cooking, especially long
draped silk or nylon sleeves.

Beware house slippers that cause you to slip and fall. Get some that have non slip soles or head
to a craft store for a bottle of rug backing - used to paint the back of home made rugs. Put some
on the soles of your house slippers.
